WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.-Surtex has selected four winners of this year’s designext international student competition.
The honorees are Jenny Boucher, who is studying material arts and design at Ontario College of Art & Design in Canada; Samantha Mast, a student in the crafts department with an emphasis on textile design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit; Tori McLean, a student in fashion and textile design at Winchester School of Art in the United Kingdom; and Karina Rasmussen, who is studying fashion and textile design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
This year’s competition was “Street Inspiration.” Participating students were asked to submit original surface designs inspired by what they think will be “street influences” in the year 2020. The four winners were chosen from more than 70 submissions for their creativity, development of surface of design, the potential commercial appeal of their designs and their overall presentation.
The winners will receive a trip to New York City to participate in Surtex, where they will display their winning entries in a booth presentation, receive an in-depth critique of their portfolio by the judges and gain exposure to potential industry colleagues through networking activities. The judges will then select one grand prize winner, who will receive a $1,000 cash award.
