WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.-The grand prize winner in the 2012 designext international student competition at Surtex is Kirby Lee Smith, a senior in the fibers department of Savannah College of Art and Design.
The competition’s theme was Outdoor Celebration in the Year 2020. Students were challenged to create an overall concept and a minimum of six surface designs that projected future trends. The panel of judges said Smith showed work on diverse surfaces, with a strong commercial appeal, and displayed production skills that indicated her preparation for “the teamwork of bringing art to the market.”
Smith has won a $1,000 cash award for her work. She has received other recognitions including academic scholarships for her achievements as a student, and has participated in other juried exhibitions in Atlanta and France. She is slated to join Target, where she served in an internship in domestics design in the summer of 2011.
