WHITE PLAINS, NY.–GLM said it has taken many steps to ensure that the winter edition of NY Now will be affordable and easy to work, despite its overlap with the 2014 Super Bowl, which will take place in nearby East Rutherford, N.J.
As previously reported, GLM has added a weekday to the market schedule and has opened hotel reservations early with a large block of rooms that it says are lower priced than an independent search for room rates would yield. In addition, Crain’s New York Business reported earlier this month that the National Football League had eliminated or scaled back the number of rooms it had reserved at New York City hotels, freeing up more rooms.
The six-day market will open on Saturday, Feb. 1, and will run through Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014. In anticipation of Super Bowl XLVIII, which will be held on Sunday, Feb. 2, GLM during the summer said it had researched New York City’s capacity and confirmed that it can easily handle the additional traffic in terms of flights, restaurants and general crowds. Attendee surveys conducted by GLM indicated that while the overlap with the Super Bowl would not preclude retailers from attending the winter market, an additional weekday would minimize concerns about Super Bowl weekend attendance, the show owner and organizer said.
“This marketplace is a pivotal event for thousands of retailers and suppliers, so the extension to a six-day market is a win-win for all,” said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. “Two weekend shopping days are still available for retailers who can only come on Saturday and Sunday this coming winter, plus an extra weekday is guaranteed for those who want to come after Super Bowl weekend.”
With New York City’s 90,000+ hotel rooms, and despite the addition of the Super Bowl, there is more than enough hotel capacity to accommodate all visitors. “With the Super Bowl, it will be an even more exciting time to be in New York City,” Falkenberg said. “We have more than enough New York City hotel rooms at advantageous rates reserved for the winter 2014 market.” Market participants can pre-register online at http://tphousing.com/ec.html.
“With 52 million tourists each year, and 1.6 million daily commuters, New York City is always busy,” Falkenberg added. “However, late January/early February is actually the ‘quietest’ period for New York City in terms of visitor numbers, hotel room use and air traffic. The reality is that the Super Bowl’s impact on New York City this February likely will not create any larger crowds than our customers already experience during the August market. At the same time, winter market participants can enjoy some unique and exciting free Super Bowl-connected ‘only in New York’ events this winter.”
