Coyuchi Expands into Rugs at New York Market

       

       

BERKELEY, Calif.–Organic textiles company Coyuchi has added accent rugs to its product mix, which will be unveiled at the New York Home Fashions Market this week.

Showing in the Euroletto showroom in 230 Fifth Avenue, Coyuchi now offers rugs in several patterns and colorways, all made of 100 percent organic cotton.

“It’s our first foray into the floor,” said Matt Levinthal, vice president of marketing, Coyuchi. The rugs can go in the entryway, the bedroom, the bathroom, “really anywhere in the house.” Like its other products, the rugs are made in India, “the largest organic cotton producer in the world.”

While the company would love to expand its dealer base with the new category, it also wants to service its current customers who have been asking for rugs, he said.

With initial patterns called Diamond Pebble, Triple Diamond and Wave, the rugs have retail price points of $63 for a 2-by-3 to $360 for a 5-by-7. The Plush design with a stripe and bound with cotton canvas comes in one size, 21-by-34 inches, retailing for $50.

While bedding is its original product category and still its largest, Coyuchi’s other categories are also growing, Levinthal said. Bath, for example, is quickly growing, he said, and two new towel lines will also debut at market. Another expanding group is blankets, which “can really take us into the living room.”
