GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-Rick Keyes, a 26-year veteran of Meijer, has been named president of the Midwestern hypermarket and grocery retailer.

Keyes will succeed J.K. Symancyk, who will become president and CEO of Academy Ltd., parent company of specialty retailer Academy Sports & Outdoors, on Nov. 2. He will report to Hank Meijer, co-chairman and co-CEO.

Keyes joined Meijer as a pharmacist in the company’s Columbus, Ohio, location. Since 2006, he has been executive vice president of supply chain and manufacturing. In this role, he oversaw Meijer’s expansion into manufacturing with the acquisition of one dairy and the construction of another. He also conducted initiatives ranging from the launch of a near-zero emission truck fleet to significant investments in lean distribution technologies.

“Rick’s proven leadership has been an inspiration to our team,” Hank Meijer said. “He has grown up with Meijer, excelling in positions in both pharmacy and store operations, and, most recently, building industry-leading supply chain and manufacturing operations.”

In 2014, Meijer recorded home furnishings sales of $750 million, according to HFN market research.
