NEW YORK–A little bit of Italy opened up in the Flatiron district yesterday in the form of Eataly, a 42,500-square foot artisanal Italian food and wine marketplace (along with a soon-to-open 4,500-square-foot beer garden) in the former Toy Building at 200 Fifth Avenue.
Eataly is a collaboration between Joe Bastianich, Mario Batali and Lidia Bastianich of Batali-Bastianich Hospitality Group and Oscar Farinetti, founder of Eataly, which first opened in Turin, Italy, in 2007. The Manhattan Eataly encompasses seven full-service eateries, a cafe, wine shop, bakery and patisserie and culinary educational center, as well as a marketplace, which includes home furnishings.
In between taking pictures with fans, Batali told HFN that his own brand of cookware is not available at Eataly, as his partnership with Copco “is phasing out.” A new partnership is in the works, however, and the new line will be available in Eataly next year.
Located near Eataly’s Le Verdure restaurant, the home section is divided into two areas, and products are separated by vendor. Bialetti cookware and espresso makers and accessories and Guzzini tabletop and serving pieces are in one area. Nearby, Kartell lamps are displayed, along with a sign explaining that all of Eataly’s seating is Kartell product, also available for purchase.
In between the checkout and the beer section, the other home area includes Alessi cookware, tabletop and housewares, Paderno Sambonet cookware, bakeware and kitchen tools, Spiegelau wine glasses, and Vic Firth’s Batali-branded salt and pepper mills. (The Paderno cookware is what the cooks in Eataly’s kitchens use, said an associate.) Eataly has its own branded product here as well, including white dinnerware, oven mitts and aprons, along with T-shirts for tourists.
