SAN BRUNO, Calif.-Walmart has unveiled a new search engine for walmart.com, developed by @WalmartLabs, the retailer’s own technology hub.
Called Polaris, the new engine is based on the Social Genome project, a platform that connects people to places, events and products. It focuses on engagement understanding, taking into account how a user is behaving with the site to return the best search results for them. It was developed by a team of experts in information retrieval, machine learning and text mining within @WalmartLabs.
Polaris also delivers a new and intuitive results page when browsing for topics, instead of giving a standard list of search results. This allows shoppers to discover new items they may not have considered, according to Walmart statement.
Walmart.com has been migrated to Polaris over the past few months and is now fully powered by the new search engine. Polaris is also used for mobile search and will expand to power the company’s international e-commerce sites over the coming months, the statement said.
