NEW YORK-Home furnishings and interior design retailer Lillian August opened its fifth location last month and its first freestanding store outside Connecticut, where it is based. The 17,000 square-foot space here on West 20th Street aims to be a one-stop resource for both consumers and interior designers, Dan Weiss, president and chief executive officer, told HFN, as it's a showroom, antique shop and design store all in one.
And Manhattan was a desired location for the retailer. "We knew we wanted to be in the city," he said. "We were looking for a lot of years."
Now the two-level space includes home furnishings, accessories and gifts on the ground level, while custom furniture, window treatments, fabrics and, soon, rugs are found on the lower floor.
About half of its product line is exclusive or one-of-a-kind, Weiss said, while its interior design segment is about half of its business. Besides its three Connecticut locations, the retailer also recently opened a new location in Los Angeles' H.D. Buttercup furniture emporium. The retailer was founded by Weiss' mother in 1987.
"We're happy if the consumer buys a pillow or we design their whole house," Weiss added. And he was already satisfied with the new location. "We're glad we're here; it already feels like home."
