RESTON, Va.—Consumer spending online on Green Monday earlier this week rose 12 percent over last year, totaling $954 million, according to research by comScore, the digital-marketing research firm.
A designation for the second Monday in December, Green Monday has historically represented one of the peak days in online spending for holiday gifts. This year’s total was second only to Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, when shoppers spent more than $1 billion on Internet purchases.
Calling this year’s Green Monday “another banner day for the 2010 holiday season,” Gian Fulgoni, comScore’s chairman, added that the occasion generally marks the beginning of the heaviest online shopping week of the season, through “Free Shipping Day” on Friday, Dec. 17. Survey results by comScore show that 65 percent of shoppers have not yet finished their shopping, however. Fulgoni called this result “a stark reminder that many consumers are still strapped for cash and may be waiting for their mid-December paychecks before they can finish their shopping.”
