Foran to Succeed Simon as Walmart U.S. Chief
BENTONVILLE, Ark.-Greg Foran has been promoted to president and CEO of Walmart U.S. Foran will succeed Bill Simon, who had been in this role since June 2010.
Foran, who had been named president and CEO of Walmart Asia earlier this year, will report to Doug McMillon, the parent company's president and CEO. He starts in his new position on Aug. 9.
Simon will be available on a consulting basis for the next six months "to ensure a seamless transition," according to a Walmart statement.
A 35-year retail veteran, Foran joined Walmart in October 2011 and became president and CEO of Walmart China in March 2012. Before coming to Walmart, he served in a number of executive posts with Woolworths, the Australia-New Zealand retailer, including managing director of supermarkets, liquor and petrol.
Simon, who had been with Walmart for eight years, was credited in the statement for leading a turnaround that re-emphasized the company's focus on everyday low costs, everyday low prices and an increased product assortment. Commenting on his departure, he said that "this felt like the right time to move on and focus on my next opportunity." He did not say what that "next opportunity" might be.
The Walmart executive ranks have undergone a major transformation since last November, when McMillon--who had been president and CEO of Walmart International--was chosen to succeed Mike Duke as president and CEO. In December, David Cheesewright, previously president and CEO of Walmart's Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, was picked to succeed McMillon as head of Walmart International.
In June, Shelley Broader, who had been president and CEO of Walmart Canada, was named to succeed Cheesewright as head of Walmart EMEA. Later that month, Fernando Madeira, head of Walmart's Latin America e-commerce operations, was promoted to president and CEO of Walmart.com. Still later in June, Dirk Van den Berghe, CEO of Delhaize Group's Belgium and Luxembourg operations, was hired to succeed Broader as head of Walmart Canada.
