COLUMBUS, Ohio—In a preliminary statement on its fourth-quarter results, Big Lots said net sales finished the quarter at $1.5 billion, up 3.8 percent from the fourth quarter of last year.
Same-store sales in the quarter, which ended on Jan. 29, were flat compared to the prior fiscal year as the January winter storms through much of its major regions provided a major downward push on comparable-store numbers for the last three weeks of the month. Big Lots said furniture, home and seasonal were the departments that registered the best performance in the fourth quarter.
For fiscal 2010, Big Lots’ sales totaled $4.9 billion, up 5 percent from fiscal 2009. Same-store sales for the fiscal year rose 2.5 percent.
