BALBOA ISLAND, Calif.—Bernie Abrams, founder and former chairman of specialty retailer Three D Departments, has died. He was 90.
Abrams founded the company in 1957, and led it to become a national presence in home-furnishings retailing. It eventually encompassed Three D Bed and Bath and Linens Plus locations in California, Connecticut and Arizona. Abrams retired from the company in 1998, and Three D Departments closed down the following year.
Abrams was a decorated World War II officer in the Army Air Corps. He was also active in charities such as the American Jewish Committee and the Orange County Jewish Federation, serving on the boards of both associations.
Abrams is survived by his wife, Jane; his son, Don, also a former executive with Three D and now a broker with Abrams Coastal Properties; daughters Jodi Seaver, Betsy Abrams, Wendy Bassell and Diane Abrams; and 10 grandchildren.
