  • Sears Canada Cuts Loss in Q1

    Sears Canada logoSears Canada reported a first-quarter net loss of C$59.1 million (about $48.8 million), compared to the net loss in last year’s first quarter of C$75.2 million (about $68.2 million). The retailer was able to stanch some of the red ink thanks primarily to cost reductions. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell 15.9 percent in dollars and 317 basis points as a percentage of sales, to 42.7 percent. More

  • Bankruptcy Court Approves EveryWare Restructuring Plan

    EveryWare Global logoThe U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware has confirmed EveryWare Global’s financial restructuring plan, clearing the way from the company’s exit from Chapter 11. EveryWare filed a prepackaged Chapter 11 on April 7. The restructuring plan provides for the cancellation of the company’s existing common stock, and will give cash equal to 6 cents per existing share to the company’s existing stockholders and holders of in-the-money warrants.   • Ross Tops Expectations in Q1 Profit, Sales

           First-quarter net income and sales for Ross Stores were better than the company expected—with net income finishing at $282.2 million, up 15.7 percent from last year’s first quarter. Net sales in the quarter, which ended on May 2, jumped 9.6 percent to $2.9 billion, including a gain of 5 percent in same-store sales. Speaking yesterday in a conference call to financial analysts, Ross CEO Barbara Rentler said both the top and bottom lines exceeded the company’s expectations. More
