  • Spira, Inventor of Solid-State Electronic Dimmer, Passes

    Joel SpiraJoel Spira, the founder of Lutron Electronics who invented the lighting dimmer now commonly found in homes, recently passed away. He was 88. Born in New York City in 1927, Spira served in the U.S. Navy, and later worked for a defense contractor on projects that ultimately led him to think about lighting control and how to commercialize the dimmer for household use, a company statement said.
