Mattress Industry Sales Continued Slide in April

ALEXANDRIA, Va.–U.S. sales of mattresses and foundations fell on both a dollar and a unit basis in April, as the industry continued the funk that started last year.
According to data from the International Sleep Products Association, unit sales of mattresses dropped 4 percent in April to less than 1.4 million units, while dollar sales fell 3 percent to $296.5 million. The numbers, released in ISPA’s Bedding Barometer, also show that unit sales for the January-April period were down 4.5 percent, while dollar sales declined by 5.3 percent. The data is culled from responses to the association’s monthly survey from 18 manufacturers of mattresses.
The average unit selling price of the mattresses sold in April did rise by 1.1 percent to $216.11. For the January-April period, the average unit selling price was off 0.9 percent to $210.67.
