Whirlpool Cited for Social Responsibility

BENTON HARBOR, Mich.–Whirlpool has been named one of the top 50 companies in social responsibility by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship and the Reputation Institute.
In a survey conducted by the institute for the Boston College center, Whirlpool ranked 23 with a social-responsibility index of 72.24, which was derived from a survey of U.S. consumers. A Whirlpool statement said the company finished 32nd on this list in 2008.
Among Whirlpool’s activities to promote social responsibility are its office of environmental control, established nearly 40 years ago, and its establishment of a global greenhouse-gas reduction target in 2003. Whirlpool and its employees also support non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity International and Cook for the Cure. The company has donated more than 100,000 ranges and Energy Star-qualified refrigerators to Habitat for Humanity homes, and has raised more than $7 million globally to fight breast cancer through its KitchenAid unit for Cook for the Cure.
