Blog: Madison’s April in NY

Program your DVR for the The Katie Show on May 1. That’s when Madison’s April in New York, one of Cru’s most inspirational dinnerware designs, will be featured on a segment with Sandra Lee and Vanna White. The pattern was designed by a talented young girl named Madison who envisioned New York in bloom in the spring. Madison later succumbed to cancer, but Cru put the pattern, with its beautiful pale blue border and cherry blossom design, into production. Cru donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of that pattern to St.

Blog: Tabletop Vendors Go for Gold in New York

Gold is the metal of choice among tabletop vendors presenting their wares at market this week. Yellow gold, often with a matte finish, decorates goods in all categories, from dinnerware to glassware to flatware. Lacey designs, Scandinavian influences and the color combinations of black and white and blue and white also dominated showroom displays.

Did you know that the shallow champagne coupe was created by Marie Antoinette so that she could finish her drink without tipping her head back?

I learned that bit of cocktail trivia in “Cool Cocktails: Entertaining with Fun Glassware” by Robert Zollweg, Libbey’s creative director.

The New York Tabletop Show wraps up today, winding down what has generally been a positive show (as a side note, a number of manufacturers made a point of mentioning big, noteworthy launches to look out for in April). Among the news from the show, Rogaska launched Rogaska Crystal Luxe, a new grouping of crystal stemware and barware in a variety of modern shapes and finishes (not to mention bright orange and blue packaging), all geared towards a younger market. It is a step up, price-wise, from the opening-price-point Celebrations collection, which is also new.

Blog: George Watts Rekindles the Love in Milwaukee

7

Sometimes one of the biggest dilemmas you have when planning a celebration is deciding what kind of party to have.

Milwaukee specialty store George Watts & Son, which is marking its 143rd anniversary on Sept. 27,  decided that the best way to mark the occasion would be to honor those who made it possible, namely its vendors and the Milwaukee community. So this Thursday it is having an open house and inviting all its vendors to join the party and get a chance to meet many of the retailer’s customers, both old and new.

Blog: Svend Jensen Makes its Return at Ambiente

For years glassmaker Svend Jensen has remained out of the tabletop industry spotlight, but not off its radar. The company has not been to a trade show or marketed its name since 1998, although it has been designing, sourcing and selling to all the big name brands on an OEM basis since that time. Company head Per Jensen remains well regarded in the business.

Blog: The Best Invite I Got All Week

I am the fortunate recipient of many lovely invitations to industry events, but I have to say a recent Waterford invite really caught my eye. Actually, it continues to catch my eye because its lenticular design presents a different image depending on the angle from which you are looking at it, so every time I get up from my desk I see either a flash of diamond-shaped crystals or the twinkle of an elaborate crystal chandelier.

Tendence: Eight Centuries of Introductions

7

While talking to Nicolette Naumann, vice president of Messe Frankfurt, about her expectations for this year’s Tendence show—I was curious about how long Tendence has been in existence.

After a quick calculation in her head, she said, “772 years.”

Wow! As in, almost eight centuries? I expect European buildings and other architecture to be hundreds of years old; I never heard of a trade show that old.
