LAS VEGAS—The International Market Centers (IMC) announced plans to implement an evolution of the World Market Center here, transforming its Gift + Home Market into a premier destination.

Beginning next year, floors 1-14 in Building C, which comprise 1.7 million square feet, will be repositioned as a gift and home powerhouse. The plans include the addition of such underrepresented categories as tabletop, home textiles, kitchenware and gourmet, as well as expansion of existing categories and re-merchandised presentations.

NEW YORK–Four students at Pratt Institute of Design took home prizes in the inaugural George Kovacs Lighting Competition last night at a crowded ceremony and reception at the New York Design Center.
The competition challenged students to create table and floor lamps that exemplify the modern aesthetic of the late Kovacs, while using energy-efficient light sources and addressing issues regarding green manufacturing. CARY, N.C.–Lighting manufacturer Generation Brands has emerged out of Chapter 11, which it filed less than two months ago.
Under its completed restructuring, the company has eliminated more than $150 million of its debt, as well as received a new $20 million equity investment from an affiliate of Quad-C Management, Generation Brands’ principal stockholder. With the new outlay of money, Generation Brands will have approximately $40 million in liquidity and no debt maturities until 2014.

ROCKY MOUNT, Va.–Uttermost has added an additional 100,000 square feet of space to its Virginia facility, for a total of almost 600,000 square feet under one roof. NEW YORK–Sidney Medoff, former owner and president of Metropolitan Lighting Fixture Co. Inc., died July 27. He was 92.
Medoff was active in the lighting industry for more than 50 years. He graduated from what is now Rutgers University with an advanced degree in law. He practiced law for a short time, interrupted by World War II where he served as a first lieutenant in Army Intelligence.
In 1943, he married Debra Simpson and joined her family in the lighting business in 1947 as owner and president of Metropolitan Lighting in New York City.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla.–Office Depot has launched an exclusive brand of compact fluorescent light bulbs in all its stores and on its Web site.
The launch is part of the environmentally preferable “Office Depot Green” product line, introduced on Earth Day.
Recognizing that CFLs use about 75 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs, the energy-saving bulbs are the most economically and environmentally beneficial products customers can buy, Office Depot said in a statement.

Kinder Harris Rebuilds Factory After Tornado

STUTTGART, Ark.–Kinder Harris is rebuilding its wall decor factory here and working out of a temporary office after damages sustained during a tornado that ripped through the area on May 10.
The factory’s roof has been replaced and water damage is being cleaned up, while building repairs are completed.
“Our relocated offices are up and running now while building repairs are nearing completion,” said Kris Lindsey, president of Kinder Harris. “We are accepting orders for early August delivery.”

ATLANTA–The Home Depot has launched a free, in-store, consumer compact fluorescent light bulb recycling program at all 1,973 locations.
Consumers can bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs to the returns desk to be handled by an environmental management company that will then coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance, the retailer said in a statement.

COPPELL, Texas–Craftmade International Inc. reported a decrease in net income of 14.7 percent to $639,000 for the third quarter ended March 31.
The company also reported a quarterly sales increase of 144 percent to $54.9 million, reflecting its acquisition of casual furniture maker Woodard LLC.
Craftmade said the Woodard acquisition boosted consolidated net sales, partially offsetting the decrease in ceiling fan, lighting and accessories sales in both operating segments, primarily due to the continued decline in the overall housing market.

JONESBORO, Ark.–Jimmy D. (“Jimmy Doyle”) Hunt, founder and former principal owner of Jimco Lamp Co., died at his home on March 21, after an extended illness. He was 72.
Hunt founded Jimco in 1963 and built the company from a small domestic assembly operation to one that designs, sources and distributes lamps, shades and accessories through most of the major channels of distribution in America, and to many customers across the world.

HIGH POINT, N.C.–The High Point Market, which has been designated a U.S. Commercial Service International Buyer Program event for the spring edition next month, has been awarded the same status for the spring market in 2009.
The High Point Market Authority released a letter from the U.S. Department of Commerce that applauds the “Market exhibitors’ great export potential.” The International Buyer Program is designed to connect U.S. companies with foreign customers and to raise global awareness of a designated event.

Lighting Fixture Demand Projected to Reach $21.6B by 2012

CLEVELAND–Notwithstanding the current downturn in housing construction, U.S. demand for lighting fixtures is expected to grow an average of 3.5 percent yearly through 2012, resulting in a market of $21.6 billion.
The Freedonia Group, a research firm that announced its study this week, attributed the projected growth to construction in housing, highways and streets. “A stronger outlook for the construction markets will drive gains,” a Freedonia statement said, “especially the increased construction of housing and transportation infrastructure.”

CASTLETON, Vt.–Lighting manufacturer Hubbardton Forge said it made the largest profit-sharing distribution in its 34-year history.
Intended to recognize each employee’s contribution to the company’s success in 2007, the individual profit sharing bonuses, paid in a combination of cash and 401(k) contributions, averaged greater than 20 percent of each employee’s annual base compensation, according to George Chandler, president.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–The management and employees of Hunter Lighting Group/Kenroy have purchased the assets and ongoing operation of the lighting business from the Hunter Fan Co., based in Memphis, Tenn.
The new company, called Kenroy Home, will sell an expanded range of lighting and home decor products to a variety of distribution channels under the Kenroy Home brand, but will also continue to sell Hunter-branded lighting to a select group of accounts, under license from Hunter Fan, officials said.

DALLAS–Market Center Management Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to help develop and manage the LatinAmerican Trade Mart, a new wholesale trade center in Bogota, Colombia.
The 2.5 million-square-foot trade complex is scheduled to open in 2011 as the largest wholesale mart in South America. It will be the first wholesale marketplace on the continent to serve both international and domestic markets, according to a release.

Stylecraft Home Decor To Make Cabana Joe’s Lamps, Accents

HERNANDO, Miss.–Stylecraft Home Decor has signed a deal to produce lamps and decorative accessories under the Cabana Joe’s name and will unveil a full collection at the April High Point Market, officials told HFN.
At the High Point Market in October, Stylecraft unveiled the first Cabana Joe’s wall decor line, which met with a strong response, prompting executives to pursue the other categories when they came available, said Charlie McCaffrey, Stylecraft president. Pacific Coast Lighting most recently had the Cabana Joe’s license for lamps and accessories.

MEMPHIS–Hunter Fan Co. has hired Jim Gallman as vice president of brand marketing, a new post in which he will be responsible for a consistent brand message across all of Hunter’s product lines.

NEW YORK–Jan Vingerhoets, formerly executive vice president of Alessi USA, has left the company to join lighting company Artemide. He had been at Alessi for 11 years, and served as executive vice president since 2005.
Who or if Vingerhoets is succeeding someone at Artemide was not available at press time. Alessio Alessi, co-chief executive officer of Alessi, said that a new person has been hired to fill the position, though declined to give specifics at this time.
