LAS VEGAS—The International Market Centers (IMC) announced plans to implement an evolution of the World Market Center here, transforming its Gift + Home Market into a premier destination.

Beginning next year, floors 1-14 in Building C, which comprise 1.7 million square feet, will be repositioned as a gift and home powerhouse. The plans include the addition of such underrepresented categories as tabletop, home textiles, kitchenware and gourmet, as well as expansion of existing categories and re-merchandised presentations.

NEW YORK–Kravet will begin representing Ralph Lauren Home products, including fabrics, wall coverings and trimmings in 25 to-the-trade showrooms under a new agreement announced by the two companies.
Kravet will also show Ralph Lauren lighting and window hardware in selected locations.

NEW YORK–Iconix Brands posted net income of $18.2 million in the first quarter, up 43 percent from the first quarter of 2007 and a new record for the company.
Revenue for the brand-management company rose 81 percent in the first quarter to $55.7 million; and operating income (measured as earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation) rose 66 percent to $38.8 million. Diluted earnings per share were 30 cents, up 43 percent over last year’s first quarter.

NEW YORK–Executives Working in Home Textiles (EWHT) will donate $2,500 to the Educational Foundation for the Fashion Industries for the Home Products Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology to fund travel scholarships for students.
According to a statement from EWHT, the organization will present the donation at an FIT student trend presentation on Feb. 23. EWHT said it has learned that existing endowments to the Home Products Department will not provide the needed funds for student travel grants this year and next year.

According to a joint statement from the two companies, the proposed venture will supply luxury linens and other home textiles, with a focus on the countries of the European Union. Abhishek/Trident currently produces and exports terry towels to more than 60 countries, with Europe and the United States accounting for 90 percent of its exports, the statement said.

ALBANY, N.Y.-Primaloft and Downlite have raised both money and product donations to elevate awareness for domestic violence through the “Support Your Dreams” campaign.
The campaign was designed to help women and children in making a transition to a new life away from domestic abuse. CPSC Announces Recalls of Roman Shades and Roll-up Blinds

WASHINGTON–The Consumer Product Safety Commission said multiple firms are recalling millions of Roman shades and roll-up blinds.
The reason for the recalls are that the products present serious risks of strangulation to young children, said a CPSC statement. The commission has received reports of five deaths and 16 near strangulations in Roman shades since 2006, and three deaths involving roll-up blinds since 2001.

This effort was begun by SSA to create and set definitions, terms and standards for the labeling of “green” products in the bedding industry.

NEW YORK-Herb Lichtenberg, former president of S. Lichtenberg & Sons, has died.
A 1955 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Lichtenberg joined the company founded by his father, Sam, in 1958, according to a biography posted on the West Point Association of Graduates Web site. He became president of the company in 1980 and ran it with his brother, Alan, who was chairman and also a West Point graduate. Alan Lichtenberg died in 2003. The two brothers guided the company into one of the largest manufacturers in the U.S. home-textiles industry.

NEW YORK–Third-quarter net income for Iconix Brand Group rose 25 percent to $20.5 million, setting a new earnings record for the brand-management company.
Revenue also set a record in the quarter, totaling $59.4 million or 8 percent higher than in the third quarter of 2008. This was enough to offset a 13.3 percent increase in selling, general and administrative expenses. Real-Life “Norma Rae” Dies

BURLINGTON, N.C.–Crystal Lee Sutton, the union organizer who was the inspiration for the film “Norma Rae,” died on Friday, according to published reports. She was 68.
Sutton was fired for her efforts in 1973 to organize the J.P. Stevens plant in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. The company was eventually ordered by the court to hire her back and pay her back-pay; she returned to work, then quit to become an organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing and Textiles Workers Union.
Sally Field won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Sutton in the 1979 film.

Hancock Slashes Net Loss in Second Quarter

BALDWYN, Miss.–Hancock Fabrics reduced its second-quarter net loss from $10.9 million last year to $2.3 million this year.
The improvement in results came from a combination of expense reductions and better management of the company’s balance sheet. Selling, general and administrative expenses were down 6.8 percent in the quarter, and cost of goods sold was lowered by 10.6 percent. In addition, Hancock has paid down $27.5 million in debt since exiting bankruptcy on Aug. 1, 2008, which sliced down its second-quarter interest expense by 61.5 percent.

NEW YORK -- It was all gifts all the time this week in New York City as gift shows opened over the weekend at the Javits convention center and at showroom buildings around town, including 41 Madison, 7W and 230 Fifth Avenue.
Exhibitors at the New York International Gift Fair at the convention center almost uniformly said traffic was good on the opening days of the event and that order-writing was brisk. NEW YORK–Royal Heritage Home has purchased the assets of Rainbow Linens, a marketer and distributor of bed-sheet sets.
Terms were not disclosed. NEW YORK–George Bardwil, owner of Bardwil Linens, has been arrested for assaulting a housekeeper at his apartment here, according to published reports.
Bardwil was charged with third-degree assault on his maid, after allegedly hitting her head with a heavy metal ashtray, the reports said. Later, he reportedly said he feared that the maid was stealing from him.

Herb Raab Dies

NEW YORK–Herb Raab, the long-time veteran of home furnishings retailing, passed away on May 11.
Raab, who was 83, died following a stroke.
A long-time executive with Macy’s New York, Raab eventually headed up the home area for the department store. From there he left to become president of W&J Sloane, the legendary furniture retailer with stores in New York, Beverly Hills and elsewhere. After Sloane’s went out of business, Raab continued to work in the industry, retiring in the mid 1990s.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -Tony Kirsimagi, who helped make J.C. Penney the largest retailer of home textiles products in the country during the 1990s, died on July 19 following a brief illness. He was 73 and a memorial service will be held here this Saturday.

Allen’s most recent position was with Robert Allen Design, where she served as director of sourcing in the company’s contract division.
She spent most of her career at WestPoint Home, joining the company in 1987 when it was known as WestPoint Pepperell. She was part of the original sourcing team when the company, which had changed its name to WestPoint Stevens, shifted from its domestic manufacturing to overseas sourcing.

HUDSON, Ohio–Jo-Ann Stores posted fourth-quarter net income of $20.4 million, down 26 percent from the fourth quarter of last year.
The drop was partly due to a decline of 150 basis points in the retailer’s gross margin during the quarter, due to markdowns taken to sell seasonal merchandise. In addition, selling, general and administrative expenses increased as a percentage of net sales to 34.9 percent from 34.5 percent in last year’s fourth-quarter—even though SG&A on a dollar basis decreased by 1.2 percent.

MARBLE HILL, Ga.–After 39 years in the floor covering and home textiles industry, Wes Connelly, now North America area manager for Wools of New Zealand, will retire as of March 1. Connelly began his career at Woodside, a division of Dan River Mills, which specialized in apparel fabrics. He then spent 11 years at Monsanto before going to the Wool Bureau, where he remained though the evolution of Wools of New Zealand. And though he is retiring, he still plans to consult for Wools of New Zealand and other businesses in the industry.

NEW YORK–Net income in the fourth quarter for Iconix Brand Group decreased 11 percent to about $17.1 million.
The bottom-line decline factored in a one-time, pretax gain relating to a litigation of about $7.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. Excluding this, Iconix’s net earnings rose 4 percent. Fourth-quarter revenues for the brand-management company jumped 14 percent to $54.3 million.

WASHINGTON–The International Year of Natural Fibers, a program of the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization, will debut in Rome on Jan. 22.

BALDWYN, Miss.–Hancock Fabrics posted a net loss of $2.5 million in the third quarter, compared with a third-quarter net loss of $6.1 million last year.
The fabrics retailer also managed a 1.3 percent increase in third-quarter sales, which totaled $70.6 million. Also, same-store sales rose 2.1 percent, which the company attributed to a boost in the number of store transactions.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.–Michael Fux will become chief executive officer of Sleep Innovations, the bedding producer he founded, when it emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
According to a statement issued this morning, Fux will also become a part owner of the company and will provide additional liquidity as it emerges from Chapter 11. Fux founded Sleep Innovations—which produces memory foam mattresses, pillows and mattress toppers—in 1996, and sold it to investors in 2005. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 3.

Kohl’s, Iconix Partner on Mudd-Branded Merchandise

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis.–Kohl’s Corp. and Iconix Brand Group have reached a multiyear licensing agreement through which Kohl’s will be the exclusive U.S. retailer of merchandise under Iconix’s Mudd brand.
According to a joint statement from Kohl’s and Iconix, the products include bedroom textiles, apparel, accessories and jewelry. Regarding the bedding, Petrell Ozbay, spokeswoman for Kohl’s, said the agreement gives the retailer the option to explore specific products within the bedding category.

NEW YORK–The Home Fashion Products Association will honor Paulette Cole, president and chief executive officer of ABC Carpet & Home, and the Kahn family, former owners of Croscill, at the Fashion Institute of Technology breakfast.
Cole will receive the Retailer of the Year award from HFPA. The Kahn family, which sold Croscill to Patriarch Partners in November, will receive the Distinguished Family Leadership award.

NEW YORK–Iconix Brand Group has completed its acquisition of the Waverly Brand from NexCen Brands.
As revealed in a previous statement, the purchase price was $26 million in cash. The deal adds Waverly to Iconix’s other high-profile textiles brands—Cannon, Charisma, Fieldcrest and Royal Velvet.
The Waverly brand was founded in 1923 and for many years was the property of F. Schumacher & Co. The latter sold Waverly to NexCen in March 2007, which had been exploring a sale of this and its Bill Blass brand since June of this year.

NEW YORK–Iconix Brand Group is landing yet another high-profile textiles brand with its deal for the Waverly brand.
The company has entered into a definitive agreement with NexCen Brands to buy Waverly for $26 million in cash. The purchase is expected to close in 30 days, and will put Waverly with Iconix’s other major home-textiles brands: Cannon, Charisma, Fieldcrest and Royal Velvet. According to an Iconix statement, Waverly is expected to generate royalty revenue of about $7 million over the next 12 months.

TAMPA, Fla.–Bob Hellyer, who became chief executive officer of Spring Air last year after the company merged with its biggest licensee, has resigned.
A Spring Air statement said Kevin Damewood, executive vice president of sales, and Steve Cumbow, chief operating officer, will take on Hellyer’s responsibilities in a newly formed Office of the Chairman. Damewood oversees sales and marketing, and Cumbow supervises finance, manufacturing, logistics and administration. Both report to Spring Air’s board of directors, which is led by Michael Michienzi, non-executive chairman.

HUDSON, Ohio–Jo-Ann Stores reported net income of $3 million for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2009, versus a net loss of $1.7 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2008.
Net sales at the fabric and craft retailer rose 5.2 percent to $446.1 million, fueled by a same-store sales increase of 4.5 percent. It was Jo-Ann Stores’ fifth consecutive quarter of improvement in same-store sales, and its seventh straight quarter of rising earnings per share.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.–A significant percentage of consumers plan to purchase sheets, bed pillows and mattress pads in the next year, according to a survey conducted by Louisville Bedding.
According to the results, 69 percent of the participants said they plan to buy sheets in the next 12 months. Also, 54 percent plan to buy pillows, and 34 percent plan to purchase mattress pads. In addition, a large portion of the survey respondents bought these products in the past 12 months—78 percent for sheets, 62 percent for pillows and 34 percent for pads.

WILMINGTON, Del.–Several days after sources said the company would be liquidated, Dan River Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 20.
Reports surfaced last week saying that the company, a division of India-based GHCL, would be liquidated perhaps as soon as early this week. The filing made at U.S. Bankruptcy Court here lists the city of Danville, Va., where Dan River’s headquarters is located, as the largest unsecured creditor, at nearly $2.3 million. Best Manufacturing Group, another division of GHCL, is the second largest at about $1.5 million.

The sources said GHCL, Dan River’s India-based parent, could file in U.S. District Court for the manufacturer’s liquidation in the next few days.

HONG KONG–Li & Fung, the parent company of New York-based Homestead Textiles, reported net income of $392.3 million for its 2007 fiscal year, up 39 percent over 2006.
The international consumer-goods giant achieved this bottom-line result on sales of $11.9 billion, an increase of 36 percent over 2006 and the largest growth in annual revenues for the company since 2000, according to a Li & Fung statement. Organic growth and acquisitions were responsible for Li & Fung’s huge increase, the company said.

HUDSON, Ohio–JoAnn Stores, the chain of textiles, fabric and craft shops, reported a gain of 6.6 percent during the fourth quarter ended Feb. 2, compared with the same period the year before. The quarterly gain, which translated into a 4.8 percent increase of $1.10 per diluted share, was realized on declining revenues.
Net sales for the period, at $585.9 million, were down 2.5 percent.

CARLSTADT, N.J.–Pantone Inc. this morning announced the launch of the Pantone Fashion & Home cotton swatch set, the latest addition to its Smart Color System product line.
The new swatch set, a portable case containing swatches of 1,925 colors, is arranged by color family and displayed on two removable trays, according to a Pantone statement.
Each swatch is 1 inch by 4 inches, and is arranged on rings by color family in groups of 35.

GONZALES, La.–Crown Crafts reported net income of $1.2 million for its fiscal third quarter, twice the net income it totaled for the third quarter of last year of $600,000.
All of the company’s numbers were up significantly in the quarter just completed. Sales rose by 19.5 percent to $18.4 million, and operating income jumped 127.3 percent to $2.5 million.

In his new post, Raffin oversees all of the operations of the Italian luxury-linens brand. Westgate Acquires Quaker Fabrics’ Brazilian Assets

NEW YORK—Westgate has purchased the Brazilian assets of Quaker Fabrics to increase its international reach.
The company has received the U.S. Bankruptcy Court’s approval for the acquisition of Quaker Textil Do Brasil, which is based in Sao Paolo. Quaker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August 2007. The deal gives Westgate—whose parent, Home Furnishings International [HFI], is based in China and which has distribution centers in Shanghai, Belgium and Mexico—a base for expansion in South America.

Textile Market Week Dates Move Again

NEW YORK–The highly fluid scheduling of home-textiles markets has taken yet another direction.
Yesterday, the Home Fashion Products Association announced that the dates for the New York Home Fashions Market, the showroom portion of home-textiles market week, will move yet again. The fall version of the market is now slated to take place from Monday, Sept. 15, to Friday, Sept. 19. In spring 2009, the New York Home Fashions Market is now scheduled from Monday, March 9, to Friday, March 13; in fall of next year, it will take place from Monday, Sept. 14, to Friday, Sept. 18.
