LAS VEGAS—The International Market Centers (IMC) announced plans to implement an evolution of the World Market Center here, transforming its Gift + Home Market into a premier destination.

Beginning next year, floors 1-14 in Building C, which comprise 1.7 million square feet, will be repositioned as a gift and home powerhouse. The plans include the addition of such underrepresented categories as tabletop, home textiles, kitchenware and gourmet, as well as expansion of existing categories and re-merchandised presentations.

ATLANTA–Manufacturers took advantage of this week’s Atlanta International Area Rug Market to enter new categories and debut product lines—many with lower price points.
Oriental Weavers, for example, expanded into the polyacrylic fiber to offer a lower price point, said Aaron Gray, marketing director. Utopia is a hand-tufted viscose line that will retail for about $199 for a 5-by-8-foot, he said. Designs included floral looks, as well as a solid color line that had a corduroy look.

ST. LOUIS–CCA Global Partners has sold its Rug Decor division to a group led by three of its current Rug Decor franchisees: Rick Ruby, Keith Rhodes and Bob Ellis, who own a total of six Rug Decor stores, and have been members of the Rug Decor Advisory Council since its inception in 2003.

Las Vegas Market Attendance “Exceeding Expectations”

LAS VEGAS–The World Market Center said registration for this week’s Las Vegas Market was off 2 percent compared with last year’s event and described it as better than expected.
Robert Maricich, president and chief executive officer of World Market Center, said the traffic at the market was “exceeding expectations,” given the “significant dips” in attendance at other trade shows and markets.
More than 6,500 buyers have visited the market for the first time this week, according to the World Market Center.

Former Trans Ocean Owner Hassen Dies

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.–Former executive and owner of Trans Ocean Import, Theodore Hassen, died on December 22. He was 74.
Hassen retired from Trans Ocean in 1998 after more than three decades with the company. He joined Trans Ocean in 1969 as vice president of product development and marketing. In 1982, he purchased the company with Allan Wagenheim.
Hassen’s career path started at R.H. Macy. He went on to become the floor covering buyer at Davidson’s, in Atlanta, with a final retail stop as floor covering buyer at May Company, in Los Angeles.

Jeff Portman was talking about AmericasMart’s timing when it comes to expanding the Atlanta Market Center.
“When we expanded the gift market in the early 1990s, we had the savings and loan crisis. When we did the apparel mart expansion, it was when the Internet collapsed.
“Every time we’ve had an expansion, it’s been during some very difficult economic times.”
What Portman, president of the Mart, doesn’t have to say is that each of those expansions has worked out quite well despite the precipitous timing.

The collection is comprised of 12 hand-tufted, 100-percent-wool rugs made in India, along with coordinated giclee printed wall art. DALLAS–Jeanne Carroll, director of advertising and marketing for Feizy Rugs since 1995, died on Nov. 11, according to a statement from the company. Services have not been announced.
During her tenure, she was instrumental in the creation of Feizy’s award-winning Feizy Home Catalogue and in securing Feizy’s four-time recognition by the Accessories Resource Team as Area Rug Manufacturer of the Year, said Feizy in the statement.

LANCASTER, Pa.–Armstrong expects to implement significant price increases, as high as 10 percent in some categories, this fall.
Paul Murfin, vice president of sales for the company, said “Despite two increases this year, [the company has] been unable to recover dramatic raw material increases, particularly in PVC resins, plasticizers and melamine.” Murfin said the issue is further compounded by increases in energy and transportation costs, which are adding pressure to the hardwood segment of the company’s business as well.

NEW YORK–Rug designer Nani Marquina was among the honorees last week during an awards ceremony for the 2008 International Women’s Entrepreneurial Challenge.
The awards are a joint project initiated by the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona in association with the Indian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.
Hosted this year by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, awards were bestowed on three female business owners each from India; Spain, from where Marquina hails; Africa; and New York.

CHATSWORTH, Calif.–Abbyson Living is set to open its second Power of Home retail location in November. A deal has been signed for a 20,000-square-foot prototype specialty store in the Agoura Design Center, just outside of Los Angeles in Agoura Hills, Calif.
The company said the location was chosen following extensive research into industry market trends. The Agoura Hills store doubles the square footage of the flagship Power of Home store at the Topanga Canyon Mall and will feature two floors of shopping and an indoor/outdoor bistro lounge.

Owner and designer Rosemary Hallgarten is a second generation artisan and the daughter of rug artist Gloria Finn, who partnered with artists including Milton Avery and Gio Ponti to interpret paintings as floor coverings.
RugMark inspectors will now monitor and inspect Hallgarten’s manufacturers in Nepal on an on-going, surprise basis to ensure their production is free of child labor.

NEW YORK—ABC Carpet and Home has compiled a collection of rare Chinese Art Deco rugs in honor of the Chinese New Year.
Designs in the collection are derived from Taoism, Buddhism and ancient Chinese tradition with symbolic motifs representative of prosperity, luck, wealth, happiness and courage, among others. The rugs originate from the 1920s and 1930s and are hand-crafted of premium wool.

LAS VEGAS–The Rug Market is scheduled to launch the Walt Disney Signature line of area rugs this month at the Las Vegas Market. The multiyear agreement with Disney Home is for a line of non-character, adult designs inspired by the vision of Walt Disney himself.
While the rugs are inspired by classic Disney films such as “Fantasia,” “Cinderella,” “Dumbo” and “Peter Pan,” they are intended for a stylish and grown-up consumer.

CALHOUN, Ga.–Kelly Moore has been named general manager of Mohawk Home’s Floor Mat Division. The position finds him responsible for product and business development for the floor mat business.
Moore is returning to Mohawk, where he began his career 13 years ago. He has since held positions in sales, product and business development, serving most recently as vice president of Home Centers at Oriental Weavers of America.
Mohawk did not say by press time whether the position was new. Moore will report to Rocky Casteel, vice president and general manager.

NEW YORK–ABC Carpet & Home has introduced a technology-driven line to its contemporary gallery of rugs. The Parentesiquadra Collection, also known as the PQ Collection, is a group of laser-cut, Italian leather and cowhide rugs that are embossed and hand-worked.
The process combines modern technology with traditional craftsmanship, manipulating the hides with a series of laser methods that emboss and cut the medium to produce intricate textural motifs. Artisans then hand-paint, foil and dye the hide to complete each piece.
