LAS VEGAS—The International Market Centers (IMC) announced plans to implement an evolution of the World Market Center here, transforming its Gift + Home Market into a premier destination.

Beginning next year, floors 1-14 in Building C, which comprise 1.7 million square feet, will be repositioned as a gift and home powerhouse. The plans include the addition of such underrepresented categories as tabletop, home textiles, kitchenware and gourmet, as well as expansion of existing categories and re-merchandised presentations.

NEW YORK–Gretchen Gotthart Skeldon, a 22-year veteran at Libbey, passed away from breast cancer yesterday, the company announced. She was 47 years old and had battled the disease for years.

Reed & Barton Acquires Lunt Silversmiths

TAUNTON, Mass.–Reed & Barton, marketers of fine tableware and giftware, announced yesterday the acquisition of Lunt Silversmiths following its Chapter 11 filing in December.
Established in 1902, Lunt’s product range includes sterling and stainless steel flatware, holloware and giftware.
The price of the acquisition was not made public. A Reed & Barton spokesperson said none of Lunt Silvermith’s executives will be retained.

Ambiente Opens Today

FRANKFURT, Germany–Ambiente opened here today with more than 4,500 exhibitors from 93 countries showing their latest offerings at what organizers Messe Frankfurt call “the world’s biggest consumer-goods fair.”
Some American attendees may have been delayed getting to the show, as numerous flights were disrupted by winter storms on the East Coast earlier this week.
Key trends expected at the market are simplicity in design, a back-to-nature approach and an emphasis on hearth and home.
Ambiente runs through Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Report: WWRD to Make Olympic Items

NEW YORK–WWRD Holdings Limited, owners of Wedgwood, Waterford Crystal and Royal Doulton brands, will make licensed products for the 2012 London Olympic Games, according to a report from the Design Week Web site.
The report said that WWRD will produce ceramic and crystal items, including limited edition pieces. The Olympic items will be available at retail later this year.
WWRD Holdings did not confirm the report by press time.

Jeff Portman was talking about AmericasMart’s timing when it comes to expanding the Atlanta Market Center.
“When we expanded the gift market in the early 1990s, we had the savings and loan crisis. When we did the apparel mart expansion, it was when the Internet collapsed.
“Every time we’ve had an expansion, it’s been during some very difficult economic times.”
What Portman, president of the Mart, doesn’t have to say is that each of those expansions has worked out quite well despite the precipitous timing.

Lenox Files for Chapter 11

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.–Lenox Group Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is seeking court approval for $85 million in debtor-in-possession financing.
The company will continue to pursue a sale of the company while under Chapter 11 proceedings. Through an agreement with its lenders, “substantially all” of the company’s assets will be sold to a new entity created by the lenders, in exchange for the forgiveness of a portion of the company’s debt, according to a statement from the company.

NEW YORK–7 W New York will hold the One of a Kind Wholesale Show NYC, its trademarked display of original design work, during the New York Gift & Home Textiles Market Week in January.
The wholesale show, which made its debut this summer, will take place in the 11th floor market suites at 7 W from Jan. 24 to Jan. 27. It will present original work from a juried selection of artists, artisans and designers that includes experimental metal sculptures and ornate glassware. NEW YORK–Kmart is betting big on the Jaclyn Smith Home Collection.
The bed and bath line launched last month and will expand to furniture, rugs, tabletop, home patio and lawn and garden in the spring, executives said, during a tea event here at the Bryant Park Grill.
The Smith collection fills the void in Kmart’s home mix for contemporary and transitional looks and will “broaden our customer base,” Doug Wurl, vice president and general merchandise manager of home for Sears Holdings, Kmart’s parent company, told HFN.

NEW YORK–The Zrike Company is expanding its business internationally through a joint venture with a Dutch supermarket specialist.
The tabletop company has signed an agreement with the Merison Group of the Netherlands, a company that specializes in selling non-food items to high-volume supermarket chains. LOS ANGELES–Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., has named Mark Furlet vice president and general manager for the L.A. Mart, where he will oversee all operations, marketing, leasing and building support for the nearly 250 showrooms housed there.
