LENZING, Austria–Lenzing will present its first bed made of Tencel, its natural botanic fiber, at the International Sleep Products Association Expo in March.
Made from wood, Tencel is a patented fiber with a wide variety of applications—including mattresses, basic-bedding products, linens and sleep apparel. The mattress core contains Tencel powder, and the topper and bed covers contain Tencel filling fibers, while the bed linens are made with MicroTencel. Lenzing said Tencel naturally absorbs moisture and quickly releases it again, guaranteeing a dry sleeping climate.

Leggiero Named to Branding Post at Mattress Firm

HOUSTON--Mattress Firm has appointed Stephen Leggiero to the newly created position of vice president of branding.
The naming of Leggiero represents the latest in a series of high-level executive moves at the mattress specialty retailer over the past two weeks. In that time, Gary Fazio, formerly chief executive officer, has been elevated to chairman, while company president Steve Stagner has added the CEO title to his duties. Also, Craig McAndrews and Dave Brummett have been named vice president of merchandising vice president of product development, respectively.

CORONA, Calif.--Patrick Johnson, former chief executive officer of medical device manufacturer Pro-Dex, has been appointed executive director of the WorldBed program of Anatomic Global.
In this newly created position, Johnson reports to David Farley, CEO of Anatomic Global. He will oversee fundraising efforts to enable the delivery of 200,000 emergency field beds to Haitians displaced by the Jan. 12 earthquake, and will also focus on strategic growth opportunities for the mattress manufacturer.

HOUSTON–Gary Fazio has been promoted to chairman of Mattress Firm, while Steve Stagner has added the chief-executive-officer title to his duties as president of the mattress specialty retailer.
With these changes, which were effective on Feb. 3, Stagner has assumed responsibility of the day-to-day operations of the company. Fazio, who was the previous CEO, is now focusing on strategic growth opportunities for Mattress Firm. The chairman position is a new one for Mattress Firm.

Select Comfort Profit Hits Black in Fourth Quarter

MINNEAPOLIS–Select Comfort reported net income of $35.3 million in the fourth quarter, reversing a fourth-quarter net loss of $57.4 million last year.
The mattress manufacturer-retailer achieved this result through a gain in net sales and gross margin, plus stringent cost cutting. Net sales rose 4 percent in the quarter to $136.5 million, which included a whopping 23 percent increase in same-store sales, offset by the closure of 72 stores since the beginning of last year.

Mattress Sales Post Strong December

ALEXANDRIA, Va.–U.S. sales of mattresses finished 2009 on a positive note, according to the monthly Bedding Barometer from the International Sleep Products Association.
Dollar sales of mattresses increased 7.6 percent in December, totaling $200.5 million, while unit sales jumped 10.8 percent to 643,342. For 2009 as a whole, dollar sales were almost $2.5 billion, down 9.2 percent from 2008, and unit sales fell 5.8 percent to nearly 8 million. ISPA based its data on reports from 18 U.S. mattress manufacturers, whose sales represented 56.3 percent of the market.

Therapedic, Edgecombe Join in License Agreement

PINETOPS, N.C.–Therapedic and Edgecombe Furniture have reached a license agreement in which Edgecombe will produce upholstered furniture under the Therapedic name.
The products will include sofas, loveseats, chairs, sleep sofas and other upholstered goods. The line will be manufactured entirely in the United States, with mattress inserts made with Therapedic’s MemoryTouch viscoelastic foam and PureTouch latex. It will be available for shipment throughout North America.

Third-Quarter Net Rises 66 Percent for Leggett & Platt

CARTHAGE, Mo.-Leggett & Platt posted third-quarter net income of $54.3 million, a dramatic 66 percent ahead of the third quarter of 2008.
The company managed this in the face of a 28 percent dropoff in net sales, which finished the quarter at $809.9 million. Expense controls provided the key; Leggett & Platt lopped off 20 percent from its selling and administrative expenses, while cost of goods sold fell 33 percent.

INDIANAPOLIS–Two hhgregg stores have opened in the North Carolina communities of Asheville and Wilmington.
With the new locations, the retailer now has 16 stores in North Carolina and 113 overall. Hhgregg will conduct a grand-opening sale in the new stores of its televisions, home appliances and mattresses from today through July 25.
Aside from North Carolina, hhgregg has locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Consolidated Bedding, Spring Air Licensee, Files Chapter 7

WILMINGTON, Del.–Consolidated Bedding, a licensee of Spring Air, has filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court here.
The filing is one of 20 cases began by Consolidated Bedding and its affiliates. In the filing, Consolidated identified itself as the sole shareholder and equity holder of Spring Air Co., Nature’s Rest Inc., and a number of other companies connected with Spring Air. Consolidated said in the filing that it and each of the other entities have been running at an operational loss “for at least the last year.”

LAS VEGAS–The World Market Center said registration for this week’s Las Vegas Market was off 2 percent compared with last year’s event and described it as better than expected.
Robert Maricich, president and chief executive officer of World Market Center, said the traffic at the market was “exceeding expectations,” given the “significant dips” in attendance at other trade shows and markets.
More than 6,500 buyers have visited the market for the first time this week, according to the World Market Center.

The company posted net income of $983,000, down from last year’s third-quarter net of $11.9 million but an improvement on the net losses of $7.1 million in the first quarter and $6.6 million in the second quarter.

LAS VEGAS–World Market Center Las Vegas said it moved the dates for its winter 2009 market from the last week of January to Feb. 9 through Feb. 13, 2009, to better align the market with exhibitor business cycles, relieve industry show conflicts and offer more favorable Las Vegas hotel rates.
Specifically, Las Vegas is targeting more international attendees, who might attend January shows in Europe, and the gift industry, which also has a very crowded January trade show calendar, officials said.
