What Makes a Kitchen of the Year?
This summer House Beautiful unveiled its fifth annual Kitchen of the Year in Rockefeller Center. Editor-in-Chief Newell Turner referred to today's kitchen as "the new American living room," while kitchen designer Mick De Giulio, who created the kitchen, said, "I think the hierarchy of homes is changing because of the kitchen. It's the number-one room in the house."
De Giulio said he designed the light-filled transitional kitchen--outfitted with soft seating, a fireplace, a breakfast prep area and a butler's pantry--as his own dream kitchen. "This space is mine," he said. "This is the one I would love to live in."
Turner said there were "ideas packed throughout the kitchen," and indeed, a number of kitchen design trends were on display for the week-long exhibition.--Allison Zisko
