Small-Appliance Sales Jump 20 Percent During Black Friday Week

NPD GroupPORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-Sales of small appliances posted a dollar increase of 20 percent during the Nov. 24-30 Black Friday shopping week, according to data from The NPD Group.

The research firm added that unit sales rose just 1 percent compared to last year’s Black Friday week (Nov. 18-24, 2012). The one week represented 6 percent of both total dollar and unit sales for the 52 weeks, NPD said.

Finishing number one among the top selling appliances were electric toothbrushes, followed by slow cookers, drip coffeemakers and upright vacuums. On last year’s list, slow cookers finished first, followed by electric toothbrushes, drip coffeemakers and electric griddles.

“Basic needs and convenience clearly drove appliance sales during the 2013 Black Friday shopping week,” said Debra Mednick, NPD’s executive director and home industry analyst. “But the desire for something extra was more apparent this year than last year, with consumers taking the basics to the next level and showing their willingness to trade up.”
