LONDON—Matthew Schwartz, a student at California State University, was the winner of the People’s Choice Award in the 2011 Electrolux Design Lab competition.
Schwartz took the honor with his design of a portable microwave oven called Onda, which placed him as one of eight finalists in the global competition. In an interview posted on the competition’s website, Schwartz explained that he wanted to develop a microwave simple and intuitive enough for someone familiar with microwaves to operate. “This product is ideal for use at home, in the office, for outdoor use, and could be adapted for military personnel or natural disaster relief as well,” Schwartz said.
His design garnered 24 percent of the 17,000 votes that were cast online.
