NPD: Single-Serve Coffee Gaining Ground

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-While automatic-drip coffeemakers continue to be the most popular choice for coffee brewing, single-serve coffeemakers are gaining ground in this category, according to new research by The NPD Group.

In the research firm’s new report, “What’s Brewing in the Coffee Industry: The Impact of Single-Serve,” NPD said single-serve brewers (which a company statement identified as “pod/capsule systems”) have more than tripled in terms of being the primary brewer used in homes, from 5 percent to 18 percent of households in recent years. Automatic-drip coffeemakers are the primary brewer in 57 percent of households. However, in homes that have both a single-serve brewer and an automatic-drip brewer, 52 percent use the single-serve brewer as the primary brewer as opposed to 46 percent using the automatic-drip coffeemaker.

In addition, 90 percent of pod/capsule system users and 86 percent of automatic-drip brewers said they are “very satisfied” with their brewers. Meanwhile, 57 percent of pod/capsule system users and 40 percent of automatic-drip users described themselves as “extremely satisfied” with their brewers.
