NPD: Back to College Boosts Small Appliances

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-A new study by The NPD Group showed that the back-to-college shopping period provided a booster to sales of several small-electrics categories.
According to the survey, lighted mirrors, countertop blenders, sandwich makers, single-serve brewing systems, hair-care appliances, toaster-ovens and slow cookers all enjoyed "a noticeable lift in sales" during this most recent back-to-school period. Figures were not available.
"Back-to-college shopping provides the chance to expose the younger generation to products typically purchased and used by older consumers," said Debra Mednick, NPD's executive director and home industry analyst. "While the impact of this shopping season is not as strong for the small-appliance industry as its for a category like bedding, it is an opportunity for additional sales and product education, regardless of whether the product was purchased directly by the student."
