LONDON–“Fifty Shades of Grey,” the adult romance fictional story that has swept bestseller lists worldwide, is now set to expand into merchandise, possibly including home furnishings.
London-based agency Caroline Mickler Limited has been appointed master licensing agent for the property. In turn, Caroline Mickler has named New York-based CopCorp Licensing as the North American agent for the book trilogy.
Written by British author E L James, the series of books—“Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed”—details the sexual relationship between a graduate student and a young billionaire. In the U.S. the books have sold 13 million copies, a release from Caroline Mickler Ltd. stated, and the film rights have already been sold.
Home furnishings and bedding are among the categories being explored by Caroline Mickler Ltd for licensing, as well as lingerie/sleepwear, apparel, fragrances, beauty products, stationery, jewelry and adult products.
“The best-selling “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy is the biggest sensation to hit publishing in many years,” said Mickler. “The market’s interest in “Fifty Shades of Grey” as a brand is enormous. With continuing book sales and a film version keeping awareness high, we expect this property to make a very strong showing in a number of licensed categories over the coming months.”
James’ agent Val Hoskins added “I’m delighted that Caroline Mickler, a respected name in the licensing industry with such a strong track record across a wide range of diverse properties, will be taking “Fifty Shades of Grey” into the licensed market in the U.K. and helping us to develop the brand worldwide.”
