WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—The Glyptodon Community Bank by Graham Parker Ansell won the Gift For Life/New York International Gift Fair Product Design Competition.
Under the theme “Make Change,” the first such design competition required established and emerging designers to reinvent the piggy bank, with the proceeds going to the charitable efforts of Gift For Life and the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. The Glyptodon won both the People’s Choice and Designer Distinction awards at the summer NYIGF earlier this month.
Cast in one-half-inch thick cast brass, the bank is shaped like a glyptodon, an extinct mammal allied to armadillos, which lived in South America.
Ansell, a 24-year-old designer from Albuquerque, N.M., will also receive a complimentary exhibition space at the winter 2011 NYIGF, which is scheduled for Jan. 29 through Feb. 3. The winter Gift Fair will take place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Piers 92 and 94.
