TRINITY, N.C.—Sealy has debuted its first production facility in China, located outside of Shanghai.
Measuring 100,000 square feet, the new facility is operated through a joint venture called Sealy China, which consists of the parent company and Sealy Australia, a licensee. It will produce mattresses and foundations for Chinese consumers and for contract hospitality customers in mainland China. Simon Dyer, chief executive officer of Sealy Australia and general manager of Sealy China, said the next step will be to open a research-and-development center in Shanghai early in 2011, which would be Sealy’s first Asian research facility.
According to Larry Rogers, president and CEO of Sealy, the company’s business in China now encompasses 20 stores in 16 major Chinese cities. The company’s “long-term objective is to build Sealy into the number one bedding brand in China,” Rogers said.
