LOS ANGELES–The Rug Company is set to launch an exclusive collection of area rugs created by designer Kelly Wearstler. The line marks Wearstler’s first collaboration with The Rug Company and also the first time the company has turned to an American interior designer.
In designing the collection, Wearstler said she gathered inspiration from a range of different sources. “From my collection of vintage trims and wallcoverings to the tiny details of a button that I found at an old haberdashery in Paris to the natural textures and contours of a beautiful seashell,” she said. “My goal was to create designs that are unique in the marketplace.”
In fact, the varied designs reflect the influence of the Art Deco movement, nature and op art coupled with vintage fabrics and organic textures. The look combines modern, graphic designs with a soft, multicolored palette in order to complement an array of decorative styles.
All designs for the collection are hand-knotted of Tibetan wool or wool/silk blends. It is scheduled to debut this month and will be exclusively available at Rug Company stores worldwide.
The Rug Company has made practice of bringing in guest designers to create exclusive collections. Wearstler joins an esteemed roster of designers whose work has been showcased by the company, including Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Diane Von Furstenberg and Lulu Guinness.
This past fall, Wearstler was the subject of another first for a company in the home industry, this time Bergdorff Goodman. As reported by HFN, the designer developed an entire line of limited-production pieces made by artisans who reflect her distinct aesthetic. The 75-piece collection can be found in its own home shop within Bergdorff’s. Wearstler had previously designed the new restaurant for the upscale retailer. — Jennifer Quail
