NEW YORK–To celebrate Earth Day today, a number of retailers and manufacturers have incorporated earth-friendly efforts both big and small to signal their dedication to the environment and help educate consumers on making eco-friendly decisions.
Macy’s has a number of events for the week, including the launch of its Turn Over a New Leaf campaign. The program is part of a collaboration with the
National Park Foundation to raise awareness and funds for parks across the country. At Macy’s stores and online, consumers will be able to find
eco-friendly merchandise in both fashion and home, as well as buy tickets for One Good Turn, a charity shopping event on April 26 and 27. Online,
visitors can find eco tips, register to win a hybrid, or locate select stores that are giving away saplings today.
At ABC Home here, for example, a tree will be planted in Kenya to replenish the diminishing biodiversity there every time a consumer purchases a piece of “goodwood” furniture. Though the retailer’s new program honors Earth Day, it will be ongoing and each participant will receive a certificate to acknowledge their support. The program is in partnership with 2004 Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement on its Carbon Poverty Reduction Program, an effort to reduce global warming by planting five billion trees over the next 50 years.
Norwalk Furniture Corp. is holding in-store events to help consumers understand the value of choosing eco-friendly fabrics in its “Fibers of the Earth” program, from today through May 1. The program will showcase the company’s environmentally conscious textiles, which are made of only naturally derived plant materials or by-products.
Meyer Corp.’s EarthPan cookware launches today on QVC, with some of proceeds of today’s sales benefiting the nonprofit organization Earth Pledge. The cookware is coated in SandFlow, an exclusive non-stick coating made of sand, and an alternative to traditional non-stick coatings.
Ingeo Earth Month Creative Gallery also opens today here, with events including a pop-up exhibition called Fantastic Natural Plastic, a round-table panel discussion on “How Responsible Innovation Comes to Everyday Life,” and sustainable fashion design. Ingeo is a natural plastic made from 100 percent annually renewable plant resource.
